An interpreter is a person who conveys a message spoken in one language into a second language.

A qualified interpreter is an individual who demonstrates a high level of proficiency in at least two languages and has the appropriate training and experience to interpret with skill and accuracy while adhering to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

A bilingual individual is a person who can speak two languages. 

A college degree and a high level of bilingualism are the basic qualifications of a competent interpreter, but by itself does not ensure the ability to interpret. A bilingual individual may provide direct services in both languages but, without additional training, is not qualified to serve as an interpreter.

A translator has the ability to understand a document in the source language and to convey that material accurately in writing in the target language.

An interpreter conveys information that they hear orally in the target language. 

A translator writes, an interpreter speaks. 

An individual could be trained and qualified as a translator, as an interpreter, or both.
